Getting coverage is easier than you think

The Affordable Care Act has increased preventative care covered by insurance for the general population. Preventive care is defined as items or services with an A or B rating by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) and that includes "healthy diet counseling".

How to determine your insurance coverage?

1) Call the phone number on the back of your insurance card

  • Ask what your benefits are for preventative nutrition counseling

  • Verify that I am in-network with your plan by individual NPI 1265860407 and by group NPI 1548437312

  • Procedure (CPT) codes for nutrition counseling: 97802, 97803, 99404

2) Do you need a referral?

  • A referral is needed from your primary care doctor if you have an HMO plan or have health insurance from Aetna, Tufts, or Harvard Pilgrim
